With XRP reaching a high of $3.84 on Thursday, Larsen's holdings are worth about $59.9 billion. It puts former CEO Ripple right in front of Larry Ellison, who ranks fifth on the Forbes 400 list for $58.4 billion. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg ranks fourth, with a value of $74.4 billion.

Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin ranked eighth and 10th in their respective lists.

Kovanya XRP jumped 35,500 percent to $2.30 last year, well beyond the advantages of bitcoin and ethereum. The company owns 61.3 billion of its existing 100 billion XRP coins, giving Ripple a market value of nearly $235.4 billion on Thursday.

The San Francisco-based start-up uses blockchain technology to develop payment networks used by more than 100 financial institutions, according to the company. The Ripple site also says that XRP coins have a four-second completion time, versus more than two minutes for ethereum and over an hour for bitcoin.

Cryptococcal founders often hold large-sized digital coins they create. The founder of the anonymous bitcoin known as "Satoshi Nakamoto" has 980,000 bitcoins, or about 4.7 percent of all the bitcoins that will exist, based on the widely accepted analysis by Sergio Demian Lerner.
